New Delhi: Eurofighter typhoon, owned by European consortium Airbus, today gave a new twist to the pending Medium Multi-Role Aircraft Carrier (MMRCA) contract. The plane makers have expressed an opinion that they are on ‘standby’ and are ready  to’re-engage’ with India.

This comes just a day after Indian  Defence  Minister AK Antony said the ministry was probing complaints on procedures of calculating the life cycle costs of procuring the 126 Rafale fighter jets from France. Eurofighter was the plane that had lost to French plane maker in the final round of selections

Theodor Benien Vice President Communications at Eurofighter said the DEFEXPO. ”We are monitoring the latest developments in India with great interest. The Eurofighter is here at to demonstrate that we are on standby and that we are ready to re-engage any time the Indians. We have listened to the statements of the defence minister.”

The Eurofighter Typhoon and the Rafale were the two planes selected out of the six-tried out in the first round. The final select announced by the Ministry of Defence in India  in January 2012, had left out Eurofighter – which is part of the Airbus, a  consortium of European  countries. The deal is to buy 126 planes at a cost of some US $ 11 Billion.

Other than Eurofighter, Lockheed Martin and Boeing of the US, Russia’s MiG 35 and the Saab’s Gripen United Aircraft Corporation had lost out in the preliminary round.

Antony had yesterday said “The Government is looking into complaints against the procedure of calculating the life cycle cost and that issue is not yet settled. Before bringing the deal before the Cabinet Committee on Security for final approval, we would like to get clear on that aspect”. Life cycle cost is the cost to operate the aircraft, its spares, engines, wear and tear to various parts.
