Defence minister to launch 'Atmanirbhar Bharat Saptah' on Aug 11

New Delhi: Defence minister Rajnath Singh will launch the Atmanirbhar Bharat Saptah this afternoon. The move is aimed at promoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a self-reliant India with increased local manufacturing.

Earlier on Sunday, Rajnath Singh announced that India will stop the import of 101 weapons and military platforms like transport aircraft, light combat helicopters, conventional submarines, cruise missiles among others on a staggered basis till 2024. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) will be built which will be self-sufficient in terms of roti, kapda and makan as well as education and health," Singh said during an online event.
The move is meant to give an impetus to domestic defence production. Defence minister said that the defence ministry is now ready for a big push to encourage indigenous defence manufacturing in line with Prime Minister Modi’s clarion call for an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Rajnath Singh said the PM announced the creation of a new India in 2017 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Champaran Satyagraha. "Now the Prime Minister has made it clear that when we lay the foundation of a new India, it will be full of self-confidence as well as self-reliance," Singh noted.
